Oscar Nominations 2020

By Izzy Ster

On January 13th, the 2020 Oscar Nominations were released. There’s already a buzz surrounding the awards given the lack of diversity in the acting and directing category (the latter had no women nominees), Netflix receiving 24 nominations, Joker sweeping with 11 nominations, and 1917 and Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood each receiving 10 respectively. The ceremony itself will be host-free after the scandal with Kevin Hart and his homophobic tweets in 2019--the producers aren’t taking any chances. Some notable snubs in the nominations include the absence of Greta Gerwig in the directing category with her film Little Women, Jennifer Lopez in the best supporting actress category for her role in Hustlers, Awkwafina in the best actress category for her role in The Farewell, and Lupita Nyong’o in the best actress category for her role in Us, just to name a few. Nevertheless, some great films were given nods to and this Oscar season will most likely prove to be exciting. Here’s a short list of some of the nominations for the 2020 Oscars.
